In my opinion I believe that praise works better for some students and punishment works better for others. It really depends on the person I believe. If a teacher tells a student that they will get an F on the paper if they hand it in late most students will make sure to hand it in on time because they are afraid to get and F so they listen. But some students don’t like to be threatened and they may respond differently and just say they will not do the assignment then. For those students it is better to tell them if they get their assignment in on time they will have the rest of the day to watch a movie. For a student like that they might enjoy that more or would rather have time off from schoolwork than getting a good grade.

Some students do not care about their grades so by giving them something positive that they do care about can make doing the work a little bit more of a priority for those students. For me I obviously like praise more but punishment definitely work on me more. While growing up I always was playing sports and we would be punished if we did not do a drill within a certain time or if we were late for practice. The punishment would normally cause the entire team to have to be punished too like running sprints. So when your teammates get mad at you that’s punishment enough for you to never do it again. In the classroom, when a teacher would give a punishment for not doing work, it depends on what the punishment is.

If a teacher says we will have to write two papers instead of one, you bet that I’m going to be doing that first paper on time and ill make sure I do it right when I get home because I definitely do not want to have to write another paper. If the teacher says we will get 2 points off our grade for each day its late, that wont scare me as much and make me want to get the paper done right away because two points really isn’t that much off. Praise is nice but it doesn’t make me do the work, if I know nothing will happen to me if I don’t do the work only good can happen then I don’t worry too much about doing the work.
