Got a point? Demonstrating constructivism by having students argue for points

Today was an a little bit more chaotic then usual, I feel. The first thing we did was learn about Constructivism, Cognitive Constructivism and Social Constructivism. These were interesting topics and I found it fun to learn about what kind of constructivism Dr. Boyanton likes to use.

Our classroom is one of social constructivism, as students we share our ideas with each other and have discussions within the class about certain topics. We also discussed how a teacher can act within a classroom to create an environment of constructivism. Our group thought that a teacher should act as a facilitator in the classroom and resource. At times of both individual and group work the teacher should be there to ask and answer questions, as a tool for the students, not someone that tells them step by step what to do and when to do it. I think this idea is very important, I have always felt that as a teacher I will be there as a resource for my students and someone that can help them make a creative and enjoyable place to be not somewhere where no ideas are expressed or thought of. I want my students to think independently and creatively as well as use their other classmate’s ideas.

The more chaotic part of the lesson was the got a point, get a point session. We received our midterm grades today and I was very pleased with a 93. I felt that I studied and worked so hard on the exam and my grade was well deserved. As I looked through the exam I found that I made a couple of mistakes that I shouldn’t have which cost me the points I wanted. This was a lesson to me to check my exams more than twice and do a close reading of the questions. As we started our debate everyone had a question they felt was an opinion or they should get points for. Some of the arguments that Dr. Boyanton had were correct and after making my arguments I understand why the points were taken off. Each student has a different way of perceiving something and this debate that we had was a perfect way to show that. I’m glad about my test grade and hope to keep improving my grades throughout the rest of our short time left this semester.
