The video “Growing Up Online” that we watched in class was very powerful. Some of the things were obvious, but a lot of it was disgusting and out of control. I left class with a bunch of bad feelings inside. I know you cannot really blame the Internet for what adolescents are actually doing, but it is really sad that it is a medium that furthers bad behavior and bad decisions. Of course the Internet has many educational websites and harmless websites, but seeing that there are not even just a few websites that support anorexia, bulimia, suicide, etc. is so disturbing.
I also feel like adolescents are not really being their “whole true self” online like they say they are, because I think there is so much pressure to fit in and be popular online and to be found attractive that they are not really playing up to what they actually are, but to the stereotype of what people viewing the websites expect. I feel like adolescents are getting more and more open about things that should remain private, such as the 16-year-old girl that thought nothing of sending a boy a half naked photo of herself. I wish something could be done…
