Tonight’s class was a great, informative lesson in memory. Starting off the lesson with the learning of the Chinese words for Hello, Thank you and Good – Bye was not only fun but a great way to interact with our fellow students.
Memory is a fascinating topic and essential as future educators to understand. I was surprised to learn that we only retain information in our short term memory for only 3 seconds. It is with exposure over repeated periods of time that this is stored in our long term memory. I have a son who always struggles with tests and I have suspected that the reason for this he does not process the material in a correct approach. He tries to absorb too much information for a long period of time and is very unsuccessful. I learned tonight that our brain can only hold approximately seven bits of unrelated information at one time. More frequent exposures for shorter periods of time are better solutions.

Another concept which I found quite interesting is the elaborative rehearsal strategy to transfer short term into long term memory. When you did the experiment with the numbers, I broke them down into groups of three’s. I was fairly successful but still missed a few numbers. Once you showed us the square root pattern it became so clear and successful memory of these numbers became achievable.

I completely understood the logic and psychology behind the next day journal entries now that you explained it. The forgetting curve – Ebbinghaus was really amazing how quickly we forget and how important it is to do it within the next day. Also, it is difficult to connect with the emotion we were feeling that evening if we wait too long to write. Xie xie for a great lesson in memory. Zai jian!! .
