Learning from our role models

I really enjoyed today's class.  I thought that it was really nice to hear everyone in the class share their stories.  It was an important experience because it reminded me that every person has been touched by another person in their life and I think it is important to remember this when we are teaching because it almost humanizes everyone.  Sometimes just knowing that one of your students, who may seem distant or tough, may have a very sensitive side and a very close relationship to someone in his/her life can make that student more teachable.

I think that it is definitely something that could be incorporated into a class in high school.  There were plenty of times that I was in school and teachers had simply a "chill out" day because their lesson plans moved more quickly than anticipated, or they didn't want to start new material the day before a long recess.  This would be a great activity to do with the students on a day like that! I think it would not only give the students a chance to know each other better, but also allow us as teachers to a side of our students that is not shown in class on a day to day basis.
