The relationship I share with my parents is very special. Today, many adolescents and college students are somewhat embarrassed of their parents and even try to develop and maintain distance from their parents; many young people today are more concerned with their friends than with maintaining a close connection and relationship with their families. I guess I am a bit of an anomaly; I have a very close connection and relationship with my parents (as well as with my three younger sisters). My parents are both extremely supportive, encouraging me to always do my best. I am a perfectionist by nature and I have a tendency to let stress and anxiety get the better of me sometimes; however, I can always count on my parents to restore my confidence and make me realize that I am fully capable of handling any task or situation.
What I think is so important about the relationship I have with my parents is that they listen. In class, we recently discussed active listening and it made me think of the way my parents interact with me and my sisters. My parents will always listen to anything my sisters or I have to say. I always notice that they become truly engaged in what we have to say, offering advice, suggestions, encouragement, comments, and/or thoughts, depending on the conversation. I find it so beneficial and reassuring to have people close to me that I can really talk to and know that they will truly listen.
My family is very close and one aspect that really unites us and defines our close relationship is our vacations to Walt Disney World. I have been to Walt Disney World more times than I can count and every time my family makes the journey to the Happiest Place on Earth, we create wonderful new memories that further cement the strong connection we share as a family. In between our vacations, we recount these memories and the inside jokes we created during our visit; this allows my family to keep the happiness of our time together as a family and the magic of Disney alive.
It is difficult to express in words the pure joy and excitement we all feel when we drive through the gates and enter Disney property; just thinking about it right now makes my heart feel all warm, because the happiness I experience upon arriving at my favorite place in the entire world is indescribable. I think it is so important for a family to find something (a vacation destination, a movie, a restaurant, a special memory or memories, etc.) that is particularly special and meaningful to them and can bring all members together. I am blessed to have such wonderful parents and such wonderful sisters; I cannot imagine what my life would be like without them.
