I think that it is possible for a person to have more than one role model. For example, in my life – I look up to different people for different reasons. When it comes to pursuing my masters, I definitely consider my mother to be a role model. She was a special education teacher in a low-income school district on Long Island. My mother has the kind of patience and compassion that is completely necessary to become a teacher.
My mother also always taught me to always be the best I can be. I have an older sister who once said “Don’t be your best, be the best”. My mother always pushed us to be the best academically, and while at the time I was not always a fan, I would definitely say that I could be where I am today without that push. Good grades were not something to strive for in my house, they were a requirement. We were always rewarded for working so hard, which made all the time spent studying worth it. I definitely believe that I wouldn’t have gone to such a good school for my undergraduate studies, or even decided to get my masters if it had not been for my mother.
I definitely think that I’d like to be like my mother in the future. She has always been a pillar of strength for me, even in the difficult times our family has faced. When my grandfathers from both sides of the family fell ill, at different times, my mother always was there to help out and take care of them. Her caring and sense of strength are definitely qualities that made her such a fantastic teacher. Whenever I needed advice for a problem from boys, to skinned knees, to what career path to take and where to head my life, my mother was always there with advice. She would never tell me what to do, and always allowed me to make up my own mind, but would definitely give me the tools to make that decision. I think that if were to take on the traits of my mother, I’d have to consider myself lucky. I hope that one day I can be as good of a role model for my own children as my mother has been for my siblings and me.
