The great debate: How does technology affect adolescents

Today in class we did a debate on whether technology/media is positive or negative for adolescents. I was on the positive team during the whole debate. However, the negative team did have a lot of convincing arguments against technology and they almost had me jump on board.

Although I realized one important thing which is that the internet is a tool. Whether adolescents use the tool in a positive or negative way. The internet could be related to all other things like for example a baseball bat. A baseball is used in the right way (or positive way) for playing baseball, softball, wiffleball, or stickball. However, you can use something as simple as a baseball bat in negative way. I have seen people use baseball bats as weapons to hurt other people. I know that baseball bats were not made for beating people in the head with but there is nothing you can do about. That is the same way I look at the internet.

Adolescents could (and should) use the internet in a positive way (meaning not cyberbullying, or doing who knows what.)

However, students have the CHOICE which I think is the most important aspect of this debate us. Students who use the internet in the negative way have a CHOICE to use the internet in that way. If they choose to use in a negative way then they will be at a disadvantage to others. The debate we had in class was an excellent activity which had everyone in the class thinking and involved. We should have more debates in class.
