Today I downloaded and watched the movie Tough Guise. In this movie they discuss the stereo typical perception on masculinity through the eyes of the media and society: tough, muscular, aggressive, athletic, emotionally vacant, and superior, all the qualities it takes to “be a man”.

In addition, they discussed how this “tough guy” image has influenced, even encouraged violence in the majority of males ranging from adolescents to early adulthood (whether it is fighting, hate crimes, killing, raping, or domestic abuse). Largely, the media was to blame, due to its ability to highly publicize this imagine of “masculinity” via movies, advertisements, sports, and video games. Personally, I feel that the media is an extension to this misguided image.
Through generations, the perception on masculinity has always held the view of men with these hard exteriors and vague emotions… toughen up, be a man are/where terms often used.

It is so unfortunate that this has been an image embedded into the male psyche, who are now afraid to express themselves and show their emotions, because they will be chastised for it. Boys / men, now use the image (disguise) of the male “persona” as a defense mechanism against other males, a little ridiculous if you think about it, sad as well.
I agreed with the fact that the male gender needs more positive and realistic role models out there, to show them that showing emotions does not make you weak or inferior to anyone else. Expressing yourself, is healthy, and makes you a better person and communicator.
