Technological Advantage?
The controversy regarding adolescent use of technology has flooded the media, education system, and has even invaded our homes; and still the question remains whether or not technology is a danger to adolescents.
After watching Growing up Online, I could not stop thinking about all the dangers adolescents face: pedophiles, online conflicts with peers (which may escalate to a more severe situation), cyber bullying, and even access to information that encourages dangerous behavior (suicide and anorexia, for example).

It is terrifying to know how much is accessible to the adolescents of today, and I empathize with the parents who worry about their kids and the dangers they face while they are “online”; on the other hand adolescents in general face many dangers, and though technology may amplify these them (the dangers), it is not fair to point it out as the cause. Before technology there were pedophiles, conflicts and violence among students, bullying, eating disorders and adolescent suicide. As time changes so do the events in which theses circumstances occur; before technology, movies were to blame, and before they blamed movies, it was music.

After generations of pointing the finger, maybe we (the “older” generation) should try a different approach. Instead of perceiving technology as a threat, it should be (and is) used as an advantage. For example, as result of technology, the dangers of sexual predators are more obvious to adolescents and they have become more knowledgeable in not only detecting them, but protecting themselves from them. In addition, technology has produced many websites that give faces, names and locations of pedophiles and has used the internet as a tool to catch and prosecute them.
