The great debate: Does school need test?

In today’s class we had a debate on whether testing should exist in schools. Unfortunately I think the debate turn into somewhat of a different topic. I believe this happened because everyone felt that tests should exist, however, only certain types and to a certain extent. I believe that tests are needed in classrooms in order for a teacher to assess their students learning. However, I do not think tests should be the only grading system a teacher uses. In current high schools a lot of pressure is placed on teachers to properly prepare their students for the standardized tests they must complete. Standardized testing requirements have taken some of the enjoyment of teaching away, and only places more pressure on the teachers and students. Although there is currently nothing a teacher can do about standardized tests I feel that they can still make their own lessons enjoyable. Tests are needed to evaluate how much their students learn on the information they teach them.

Tests are also needed for students to show their knowledge of a subject. They give students the opportunity to display their intelligence on the material taught. Tests should not be the only grades given to a student, however, they must exist. If tests were not present a teacher would have no accurate way of assessing their students. Also all grades given would be based off of participation and projects. Not all students are comfortable enough to participate in class and the only way they can demonstrate their knowledge is through a test or an essay.

Although not all students are good test takers, not all students are good writers, or speaker. That does not mean that participation and essays should be eliminated to make a specific students life easier. May forms of grading and assessment are needed in a success classroom.

I think that testing is a hard topic to debate because everyone has a definition of testing and how it should be conducted.
