The great debate: Does school need test?

Tonight in class we briefly discussed test taking. I personally do not believe that test taking is good for students to do. Once the tests are done, the students tend to forget what the test was on anyways; so what is the real point of the test taking? I feel like if the teacher facilitated learning well enough, then test taking would not need to be done. The students should know the course material. I don’t feel like we should use tests in our schools because tests bring students stress. As soon as a teacher even mentions the fact that there will be a test on certain material. Most students tend to start to freak out wondering what the test will be on and even when the teacher explains the material, the students still get scared and nervous and stressed out.

Stress is awful for people and often causes panic, exhaustion and even affects your immune system. I know this may sound drastic, but it is important to know how stress affects students. Testing causes a lot of stress in student’s lives which is unnecessary and often pointless. If teachers really focused on making sure the students knew everything that is on the test, then the students would memorize the information better and actually learn what they should have. In order for a test to be fair, the students should be informed of what information is on the test and have it explained and reviewed during class with the teachers help. If these things are done, students will retain the information and will have learned what they need to know for the course.
