Today’s class was a lot of fun as well as very helpful to me in relation to my research project. I thought Dr. Boyanton’s solution to showing examples of misbehavior in a classroom was not only interesting but funny and enjoyable. After splitting into groups we were told to tell stories of experiences that we had based on misbehavior. Some of the stories my group told were scary to find out about as a future teacher. I don’t want there to be bullying such as name calling or having students stick post-it notes on each other in the middle of my class. We decided to use my story as our presentation.
My story was about peer bullying. One of the learning developed or slower girls in the class was getting picked on by the so called “popular” boy, and “popular” girl. The students were using profane language such as gay and lesbian and giving each other both attitudes and dirty looks. I was amazed how at age thirteen boys and girls could carry-on a dialogue like that in a classroom. I was also amazed at how the teacher was working with the other students so much that she didn’t even here this bullying. This girl could have experienced severe emotional or social damage because of this incident and the teacher did nothing about it.
After going over different types of reactions later in the class we found out that this teacher was a more permissive person. She let the students have control of the class and there were little rules enforced during the period. We also found out that it is best to be an authoritative teacher that reaches mutual negotiation with their students as well as acts as a mentor to them. These teachers have set rules but explain them to the students when necessary. This is important because the teacher is an authority in the class but the students aren’t afraid of them.
We also found out different ways to deal with misbehavior in the class, it is important to stay calm and rational, not to argue, and assess the situation in order to find an appropriate decision. All of this information as well as the activity we did in class helped me to feel more confident about walking into a classroom as well as was valuable to my research.
