Yesterday’s class was just like an information collection for me presentation. Through interactions and discussions with classmates and Professor Dengting, I supposed that my mind was greatly inspired and updated towards the topic of motivation. I always curious about how could Professor Dengting could organize the class in such an interesting and challenging way. For example, we got a lot of emotional expressions and rational thinking from the touching movie from the last class, and yesterday’ class provided everyone the opportunity to exchange ideas and discuss these inspirations. This is such a perfect motivated class; I just hope one day I am able to manage class like this.

In my opinion, motivation is complicated and common for everyone and everywhere. That is to say, motivation would change according to the variance of age, background, character, and environment. All these factors are likely to reinforce or undermine people’s motivation towards something, not only for learning, but also for life. There is no denying that people all hope they could form a positive motivation while they are working or studying, however usually it is not easy for us to control ourselves, and if the misbehave are not properly settled, the risk of developing negative circle will increase. Consequently, it is very important for us to find out the consequences of these misbehave, such as frustration, low self-esteem, a lack of interest and so on.

Moreover, in terms of teachers’ role in forming the motivation of students, I maintain that teachers should first get to know each student well and then respect the differences among individuals. There is no absolute definition as to a “good” learner and a “bad” learner. It is not wise to judge the performance of a student from one stable standard, such as hand homework on time, obey the teacher whenever and wherever. Because sometimes it is normal for students to misbehave in the class, for example, young kids are not likely to sit in the classroom for 2hours, they need time to be themselves and go out. Therefore a naughty boy could never be regarded as a “bad” boy.

What’s more, just as our discussion went that, there are many consequences which may lead to decrease students’ learning motivation. No one would deny that each of these factors could result of a poor performance of both the class and students. Nevertheless the most important for me is that students would feel bored if the study material is too challenging or too easy. I believe sometimes teachers are really confused as to what to teach in the class, especially for students belong to different levels. I remember when I was in high school, the English teacher divided her class materials into two parts, one is easy and the other is a little bit hard, in order to satisfy the different need of students. The extreme challenging class will increase the risk of developing low interest and low confidence, and the easy class will let students feel a lack of goal or even lost their enterprising attitude for study.

As I mentioned at the beginning, this course is a good example of how to stimulate students’ motivation and keeps us working hard on it. When we are sharing our ideas about what would affect a student’s development of positive motivation, Professor asked everyone to speak out the opinion. It was really interesting that students who would talk later feel challenged and even rushed for the coming chance to show his opinion. But I believe everyone enjoy this kind competitive and entertaining study atmosphere. It is not surprisingly that neither of us felt bored of the course, and I hope I could be the facilitator of such a wonderful class in my future career.
