The importance of developing and maintaining a community of respect in every school is to create a positive learning environment for all. Each school must develop strong communication skills and create a sense of family to improve respect and understanding between students, teachers, and parents.
This can be achieved by having teachers meet weekly to discuss students or plan course curriculums. Parents must be involved in their child’s education by becoming integrated in the schools community. Schools should inform parents of all activities, conduct monthly meetings to address important school and community changes or issues, encourage participation in parent teacher association (PTA), and communicate with teachers and administration to resolve any issues that arise. Students must feel safe within their school environment. Safety is developed by reducing racism and violence within the school and building trustworthy relationships with peers and teachers. Each child must feel understood and respected as an individual despite his or her differences. Every school must promote this by developing a curriculum that encourages the understanding of different cultures to allow every student to be accepted and respected. In order for a child to learn at an optimal level, a child must feel relaxed, confident, and valued as an individual.
As a mother of teenage boys, with their diversity of friends, and as a professional health care provider, I meet many individuals with diverse backgrounds. I have always taught my children to be themselves and respect others for who they are. My experience within the school community has allowed me to participate and understand the importance in creating a positive, healthy learning environment for each child.
