By the end of today's class, I felt very motivated, and slightly overwhelmed. Speaking about the community of respect laid of the basis for the rules and regulations of class. I like having some sort of structure and "law" to abide by while in class. Establishing some set of rules right as class begins I feel is crucial in establishing some sort of order in the classroom. Providing students with rules to abide by hopefully enhances their ability to learn. Rules establish a certain aura in the classroom that enables students to learn better and more comfortably. Aside from the teacher establishing rules, I think it is important to have the students give their input on some rules to establish as well. Having the students implement rules they feel will help them learn better as they feel like they have a say in the rules of the classroom.
Aside from talking about the community of respect, we also went over the syllabus in depth today which was also a big relief. At first hearing and looking at all the contents of the syllabus made me feel very overwhelmed. However after taking a step back and really looking at it again, I realized its fine, and that it is not as bad as I thought. In only being a freshman, all of this is somewhat new to me, however I feel that if you just keep organized and take the assignments one step at a time without giving up quickly it will all be fine. This also applies to many students in the classroom, it's important to break things down as opposed to looking at the big picture and the big picture only. After analyzing all the components of the syllabus, it seems like a heavy workload, however it seems very interesting. Doing the work in this course will be very beneficial to help further my knowledge of teaching and gain a general understanding of the psychological basis behind learning.
Although it's only the second class of the semester, I feel very motivated to continue on in this class and learn about the psychology behind education. I have a passion for psychology, but even more of a passion to become a teacher so I am very excited to really get underway. (Melissa Rohr- September 13, 2010)
