Understanding Erikson

I happen to find Erikson’s theory very interesting. I enjoyed learning about the stages of psychosocial development from birth to old age. As a mother, I have witnessed both of my children go through the first four stages and am proud to say have done a great job at raising my boys. However, I wish I would have learned about Erikson’s theory prior to having children. The knowledge of his theory would have helped me gain a better understanding the different periods of development.

Currently, my children are in the identity vs. role confusion stage. Although I found all the stages to be difficult, this stage is definitely the most challenging. I have one child who pulls away and is extremely rebellious and one that is very quiet and the complete opposite of the other. As a parent, I find this stage is very difficult to accept because I know my children are struggling and there is nothing I can do but offer my love, support, and understanding.

As I reflect back on my teenage years, I remember struggling at the same stage. I was raised with three brothers and could throw a football better than any kid on the block. However, when I began puberty I was not happy. I did not know how to look or act like a girl. I did not like my appearance and could no longer play two hand touch with the guys for obvious reasons. I was really stressed out but I eventually found my place in the sun. I still hate dresses and make- up but my kids can throw a mean pass!
