Today in class, professor Boyanton spoke about what makes a good teacher. This lesson was one of my absolute favorites because it was fun and also very educational. One of the main topics we spoke about was the different approaches to instruction. There are three theory’s of instruction: cognitive, behavioral, and humanistic. This was an imperative subject because as future teachers, it is important for us to know what methods we will be applying in our classrooms. After going over all three theories, I considered the cognitive and behavioral theories most important.
When using the behaviorism approach, teacher constantly uses positive reinforcement, which is something I find myself doing often when dealing with children with special needs. I praise them for their effort and try to use external motivations such as stickers. The cognitive approach deals with facilitating the lessons and breaking things down for the student in a way that they could understand. This is also another strategy that I have been using when working with children, which makes me feel that I am doing something right. The cognitive method requires teachers to engage their students in activities and help them make connections to prior knowledge.
I definitely enjoyed being able to construct my own lesson plan today. It was an amazing experience which made me want to become a teacher even more. The point of this activity was to create a lesson for a specific age group with a partner. We also had to decide what approach would embody our lesson plan. It was a really fun activity and many of my peers were laughing hysterically. I loved this exercise and I look forward to creating real lesson plans in the near future.
