Today we talked about the definition of man and what we personally thought man meant. To me a man is strong and protective and tries to be the provider of a family. I also think that they should be caring and intelligent and loving but that differs from man to man. I know that this is a very traditional view of what a man should be but just from being around guys my entire life this is just what I feel a man should be. I also wish that in certain cases they would grow up a little. I love the fact that some of my friends are completely goofy all the time and have childish humor but I feel that in certain cases because of this they don't know the correct way to handle situations. I know one of my friends is a completely childish in most situations but a lot of the time I feel like I'm babysitting him rather than hanging out with him. Sometimes he says things that he shouldn't or reacts to situations in the wrong way.
I couldn't believe how many times throughout the video they depicted men as being violent. There were so many scenes that showed men taking part in domestic violence. I always think of men being strong but I never think of them being violent to that extent. It makes sense for men to act like that in the media because of the fact that every time there are action movies coming out men are normally the ones that are showed as being violent towards one another. It is rare to find a woman as the one holding the guy being the lead in an action movie and fighting and killing people. Throughout all types of media men are always showed as being tough and violent and to an extent people expect them to be tough and strong. Even me personally can look at this and not be surprised or even disagree. I feel that guys should be tough to an extent. I don't want to be with a guy that's fighting with people but at the same time I want to know that if I were in trouble the guy I'm with would be able to protect me.
I never even noticed the fact that a large majority of the violent crimes that were committed were by boys and men. You obviously see things on the news all the time about some kind of fight or murder that has happened but
I don't think that I had connected the fact that men tend to normally be behind these actions. I guess this comes from the fact that men have constantly been brought up surrounded by media that tells them to be violent individuals and that they have to be tough and strong. After growing up around these ideas it makes sense that many people may act more violent than if they had not grown up with these ideas throughout there lives. The narrator of the video states the fact that in many cases there is a high rate of sexual violence that could come out of the fact that violence is sexualized in many cases in the media. Even in slasher movies he shows how as soon as women become sexualized they end up being attacked. He believes that this could be one of the reasons in the rise of domestic and sexual violence.
