The Community of Respect that was discussed in the second class is a good idea to enforce for class. I believe having rules that are laid out for the rest of the semester, is important. A Community of Respect is important to have in class, so that all students feel comfortable and welcome to attend their class. The activity that was done in class where everyone wrote down some important factors that they like or dislike when they are in class such as to have food or no food, not to call on any student who is not raising their hand, just to name a few.
The most important rule that I think our class came up with is to listen to varying opinions that are stated and not be judgmental of anyone so they feel inferior to participate in class. The most effective way to learn is to participate and ask questions, so it is important that students respect each other and be respectful when students speak their minds. With The Community of Respect stated on the second class of the semester, every student in class knows what kind of behavior is accepted and what is unacceptable. This way all students will be happy and satisfied that when they attend class, their wishes are respected.
Furthermore, it is important to have a Community of Respect in order for students to learn. If students know that their teacher and fellow classmates will not judge them and treat them unfairly if they are different, and that everyone is open-minded and cares about what they say; that student will be prone to learn and retain more information. If a student feels comfortable in class and everyone is respectful and caring of the other person’s feelings, the learning environment will be welcoming, and students will be productive because there is no tension created in the class. When I become a teacher, I will definitely create a Community of Respect with rules that all students must follow so that there is always a positive learning environment for my students.
