I define creativity to be when one uses their imagination to create something. Creativity, I feel is an original work made by someone. I think this is an appropriate definition because creativity is all about originality and what someone can create with it. With this being said I definitely consider myself creative in some aspects. I constantly use my imagination to create scrapbooks and collages. The reason I think my scrapbooks and collages are considered creative is because it’s not just pictures thrown into a book or onto a poster board. When I create these specific works, I add in many different objects.
For example, I made my boyfriend a collage of the two of us for his birthday. I took a bunch of pictures of us throughout that year and cut them with fun, wacky scissors to spice them up a bit. Also I added fun paper for the background for when the pictures weren’t completely next to each other. I also saved things to put into his collage. For example his birthday is in October, and when I moved back to school he bought me Hershey kisses, so I saved the little paper that comes out of the foil and used those to outline the edges of the board and I cut the word “KISSES” off the package to put on the board. I also saved the ticket stub from the first movie we saw together and I put that on the board as well. Something else I saved was the wrapping to a bouquet of flowers he got me (it had the same quote all over it), so I cut the quote out and added that as well. I feel that most people wouldn’t think to save these things to put on a collage, but I did. I think this shows my creative edge when it comes to collages and scrapbooking.
I also use my creativity when it comes to giving gifts; I usually like to make them! Last semester I took EDS 75a and learned about biopoems. To fully understand what I biopoem is we had to write on, so I wrote a biopoem about my best friend Mel. When I told her about it, she was hysterical laughing and wanted a copy of it. So for Christmas I went to Michael’s (the art supply store) and bought a plain wood picture frame. I painted, decorated it and printed out the poem on colorful paper, and I also layered the paper so it’d be more colorful (for example, I printed the poem out on white paper, cut it out, then pasted it to yellow, cut it out, then pasted it on pink paper). It came out great; she loved it and brought it with her to school! J I also made my best friend, Krista a pillow for one of her birthdays. It wasn’t just any old pillow though, Krista loves bandanas, and I wanted to use that for her gift, but I didn’t want to give her just a bandana, so I made a pillow out of two of them (it was a pretty big pillow). I wrote a friend quote on the front and the date on the back in fabric paint and then sewed it up, and fluffed it up. She loved it and it was a lot of fun to make!
I think people can be creative in many different ways. Mel is creative when it comes to designing/making clothes; Krista is creative when it comes to painting/drawing; and I have other friends who are creative in other ways such as song writing, making up a dance, etc. I think it’s important for people to find something to create and just go for it; it’s a great way to express yourself.
