Growing up in today’s society is no easy task. Adolescents are constantly judged and criticized for a plethora of reasons by their peers. Although it is easier said than done, I think adolescents need to worry less about what other people are thinking about them, and more about more important things in life. Unfortunately this is a rare occurrence. Adolescents live under microscope, and their peers are the ones examining them. One mis-step early in the day is known to the entire student body via texts/word of mouth by the end of the day.
In order to make their lives easier adolescents should try and follow the path I took during my adolescent years. In order to avoid being gossiped/speculated about I chose to stay out of the limelight. That doesn’t mean that I never went out or that I sat alone during lunch, but I never went out of my way to draw attention to myself. I never changed the way I dressed, acted, or looked to try and get attention. As a matter of fact many of my friends joke to this day about how I’ve have the same haircut since elementary school. When I was in high school, the new trend was for guys to have long hair. Walking through the halls you would see a lot of the guys with hair in their eyes. Rather than try out the new hairdo, I kept going to my barber every 4 weeks and getting my standard “buzz cut.” Why did I refuse to let my hair grow? I wasn’t comfortable with it. I thought in trying to adhere to the latest movement I potentially faced public humiliation, so I ignored it. The point is in their attempt to conform to societal demands, adolescents will try too hard to fit in and join in the latest fad, and in doing so will make themselves look ridiculous.
